I usually don’t read fiction, but I was drawn to Stony Kill. I loved being transported to upstate New York and became immediately wrapped up in the main character’s story. I fell in love with Miss Euphrates, the African-American caregiver to main character, Joss. I wanted to be the one sitting in the brightly lit, warm kitchen filled with lovely aromas—swept up in capturing every word that Miss Euphrates spoke . . .while learning her baking secrets. Author, Marie White Small is a masterful storyteller. She transports readers into a splendidly detailed land along a river called Stony Kill, weaving a tale of sorrow and redemption amongst breathtaking landscapes with imaginative dialogue. She left me wanting more. I would love to be in a book club discussing Stony Kill!

I read this book in 2 days!! So much energy and surprise!!! I loved her choice of words and phrases that make it a pleasure to read. For me is was especially joyful because I have known Marie since she was 16 years old. The characters have distinct personalities and the story keeps you interested and wanting to read the next page.
While reading this book, it was like a trip down memory lane. I could smell the scrumptious pies my mom and I would make, see all the tomatoes my dad grew in his garden, hear the ice cold wind whistling through the upstairs windows in winter.
Not everything is as cozy as it seems. There are hurt feelings, abuses, fears, secrets. Traumatic events in a person's life change them forever, especially when firearms and children are involved.
Marie White Small presents all of life's challenges, along with love and compassion.
This novel was breathtaking!! Each character is expertly written such that each find their way into your heart. Marie White Small deftlh handles the topic of a family tragedy involving a gun. The details are described so effectively that I can smell the pies as I read each word! My mouth is even watering as I write this review and think back to the amazing detail! I truly felt each and every moment as I got further drawn into Joss's world. Well done book.

Marie White Small has awoken a period of time that I could roll around in my mind and heart and say yes ! Marie's descriptions of Vermont through the four seasons strike a harmonic cord, her visual words put me right in the landscape. The way the children play especially.
I became a silent character witnessing the chain of events.
" Stony Kill " begins with a stray bullet piercing Morgan's breastbone. Joss's mother Lydah's memory of that April event she witnessed.
What I really enjoy is how Marie White Small, weaves the timeline around the Stony Kill river, characters grow and mature with the influences of youth and family as they grow older. There are mysteries revealed that stay a peek around the corner. And just at the right time you get a vision of what is to come.
Magical stories within the main story, and characters rich in lore and herbal knowledge, along with wonderful pie making with recipes shared through generations, families sharing rural life, a time rich in abundance, kitchens with fresh picked garden delights. I love the pie cooking lessons and more recipes Miss Euphrates teaches Joss.
This debut novel is better written than the books by many seasoned authors. The characters are complex, but very real. The setting are realistic. It's the kind of story that you settle into quickly, and then thinks about long after you read the last page. It's a very real story about the complexities of people and families, with enough mystery thrown in to keep it suspenseful. There's no gore and no ridiculous sex scenes. A good read all around. Hope this author keeps at it.

In this fine debut novel, Marie White Small not only masterfully carries us from Page 1 all the way through to a suspenseful and satisfying conclusion, but she leaves us hoping for many more novels that will transport us so fully and vividly as Stony Kill does. Harsh realities, insight into the human condition and elegant, spot-on prose makes this book a real treat. Read the first chapter and try to stop I dare you.
I rarely read literary works but I had heard such good things about this book I had to grab a copy. I'm glad I did! The story begins in upstate NY where the main character, Joss Ryckman, must return to her childhood home to deal with the sudden death of her mother. This sends Joss on an emotional journey as her childhood home triggers memories she feels are better left hidden. But like all darkness, it seeks to find the light and Joss’s terrible family secrets find their way into Joss’s consciousness. She soon discovers there is no escape from reconciling with her violent past.

This extremely well-written story beautifully illustrates how the consequences of one tragic moment serve as a basis for shaping the rest of Joss’s life. The story takes a hard look at guilt, maturity, accountability, and hope. This debut novel also touches on the subjects of sorrow, redemption, and forgiveness while combining beauty and truth in an elegant and effective way. Many readers will relate to this vivid description of Joss’s life’s journey.

And then there are pies. Joss’s caregiver Miss Euphrates makes pies, described in such detail you can practically taste and smell the wholesome goodness. It provides a wonderfully expressed contrast to Joss’s inner emotional turmoil. Warning you will be hungry for pies after reading this book, but no worries!
