When Laura Fraser's husband leaves her for his high school sweetheart, she takes off, on impulse, for Italy, hoping to leave some of her sadness behind. There, on the island of Ischia, she meets M., an aesthetics professor from Paris with an oversized love of life. What they both assume will be a casual vacation tryst turns into a passionate, transatlantic love affair, as they rendezvous in London, Marrakech, Milan, the Aeolian Islands, and San Francisco. Each encounter is a delirious immersion into place (sumptuous food and wine, dazzling scenery, lush gardens, and vibrant streetscapes) and into each other. And with each experience, Laura brings home not only a lasting sense of pleasure, but a more fully recovered sense of her emotional and sexual self. Written with an observant eye, an open mind, and a delightful sense of humor, An Italian Affair has the irresistible honesty of a story told from and about the heart.

An Italian Affair (Audible Audio Edition) Laura Fraser Hillary Huber Audible Studios Books

When I started reading this book, my heart sank. Written in second person, present tense? I can handle that voice for a short piece--but for a whole a book? I thought I wouldn't be able to lose myself in the story because I'd be too overly aware of the style. I had just read Fraser's other book, ALL OVER THE MAP, and had loved it. I was hoping for more of the same.

But I needn't have rushed to judgment. Soon, I was swimming in the story and enjoying her insights into travel, love, heartbreak and human connection. In fact, eventually I found I liked the second person. It created a dreamy ambiance.

Ultimately, this book is about discovering how to love without clinging, or without subverting your true self. The end has a beautiful pay-off. I love the poignancy the develops in her relationship to the man with whom she's having a love affair. And I was especially moved by her blossoming understanding of why her marriage hadn't worked.

In both her books, I'm was inspired by her "la bella vita" approach to life.

An Italian Affair (Audible Audio Edition) Laura Fraser Hillary Huber Audible Studios Books Reviews

I have read all books written by Laura Fraser and I must confess I love them all!
I love the way she writes and engages every reader. Her writing is honest and real. I often feel as if were in her shoes. This is truly a magnificent book; worth every penny and more. Hurray for this wonderful book and writer!
I chose this book because I've enjoyed everything I've read by Laura Fraser -- she writes well -- and because I've lived in Italy and wanted a chance to reminisce. The book did not disappoint me. I enjoy Fraser's sensitive, aware, and slightly sarcastic approach to things; I had some difficulty with the story line -- after several encounters with her Italian lover, I began to getfrustrated with him & I hoped that she would give him the boot. I understood at first -- Fraser's husband leaves her for an old girlfriend, she heads off to Europe to sooth her soul, she meets the beautiful professor on an island near Naples, they have an affair, sensuas, sexual -- I'm tracking so far -- but the continued, ongoing meetings in the States and abroad, that seem to be entirely at his discretion, at his beck and call, are more of a challenge to accept. Fraser is a smart, self-accepting woman, and I was a little disappointed that she would be in this type of a relationship. This would be a great little book if it were fictional. Because it is autobiographical rather than fictional, I find myself wanting to take Fraser aside on occasion and ask her what she is doing.
Fraser, often thought of as a trail writer, details this on-going story with honesty, humor and great bravery. Italy never looks better then through her eyes and those of her lover, a married Professor of Aesthetics at a French university who is traveling alone seeking to write "a little story of his own." You fall in love, too.
A pleasant read, but didn't care for it as much as I did the author's other novel, All Over the Map. I realize now I read them out of order though. I read All Over the Map first. I like reading about Laura Fraser's interesting, globe trotting life, even though her adventures with sophisticated, cosmopolitan men can be a bit hard to relate to. I like All Over the Map better because by then, she realizes that having a man in your life isn't everything.
If you have never been to Italy this is a good introduction to the country. For those that have been there it is a lovely reminder of delightful times spent in this charming country filled with warm, open people whose view on life is certainly well worth enjoying. It is not a guide book in the generally accepted sense but rather an overview as seen through the eyes of an articulate young woman. I had a bit of trouble with her use of the second person singular at first but soon found the rhythm satisfying.
I have now read the book 3 times. I bought the paperback in 2004 before returning to Italy and loved it. I now live abroad and that copy is in the US, so I bought the version to reread from the perspective of a travel writer now working on a memoir. Laura is an amazing story teller-- so much so I have used her as a coach (see her website for details). I have also read her All Over the Map-- the sequel- which made me nod because I so get the tension in both works-- the need for roots/relationship and wings/travel. I most admire her vivid descriptions and brave honesty.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not in favor of illicit affairs, but things happen in life, people make choices that we don’t necessarily agree with or appreciate, that’s humanity and always will be. I do love the writing style, I love the setting, and I love the story of the author’s emotional growth and her progression through a very difficult time.
