The Faithful S M Freedman Books

Disclaimer: I'm familiar with the author as a fellow Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award finalist who has become a friend. Although I don't read many paranormal thrillers (or any, possibly), I picked this book up because of that personal connection. I also like the X-Files, so the description of a leading character who sounded a bit Mulder-ish appealed to me. Josh here is actually a better-adjusted guy than Mulder, and the paranormal suspense is somewhat more plausible, but I can see why Hollywood is interested in this story! Think X-Files crossed with X-Men (without the superhero outfits) and maybe The DaVinci Code or the scariest cult you can think of, too. Freedman does a good job of maintaining interest and building suspense even as she switches among a wide cast of characters -- the mark of a capable writer. While some important character arcs are completed here, this is really just the beginning of a series, and oh my what a chilling closing. I'm looking forward to the sequel!

The Faithful S M Freedman Books Reviews

This is a very good sci-fi debut. Mysteriously disappearing children with supernatural powers, dedicated FBI agent set on finding them, red-haired young heroine, touch of romance, huge conspiracy, mind manipulations, powerful and secret cult, and pre-dystopian atmosphere kept me engaged from the beginning to the end.
Book is told from multiple points of view, some of it in first person, most in third. Introducing multiple characters who do not know each other at the beginning of the book is often a difficult task leading to the reader fatigue. But it is not so here because reader can figure out the connection between them very fast- the author did a great job of that. The main story has a satisfactory closure but some minor points are a little murky and there is a sequel that supposedly will clarify them.
I recommend this book to sci-fi fans who like fast action and paranormal.
Trigger/ Content warnings at the end of my review.

I only intended to skim a sample of this as I was more in the mood for something with ghosts. I ended up reading the whole thing in less than 24 hours. I clapped and yelled and swore (I'm a very active reader lol). All the details came together well, I was never confused when the author switched to a different character, and didnt feel the ending was rushed or left with open plotlines. Another reviewer complained that the main character Rowan spent all her time crying. I have to disagree. While she did cry often, as did plenty of the other characters, it was never unexpected or out of place. In similar circumstances (if any of us could even come close to the characters experiences) I think their reactions were highly realistic. I enjoyed that while there was a small romance, it was a very small side plot, and in no way affected how the main plots worked or characters actions.

I will brag I gave myself a huge pat on the back when I figured out the apocalypse plan by page 339. Anyone who did before then, you're a genius!

Ok, trigger and content warnings
Mentions of rape, description of attempted rape, child sex slavery, child rape, forced impregnation, gay conversion "therapy" by rape, suicide, extensive violence, kidnapping, alcoholism, death by childbirth, drugging of children, sexual harrassment, torture
Do you like a story of a creepy world wide cult? A story of children with ESP, a manhunt and conspiracy? Mixed with doomsday scenario? This book will absolutely suck you in, I found myself actually sitting at the edge of my seat! Enthralling characters, writing and story. Loved this book and HIGHLY recommend!
I debated on giving this four or five stars.

I'll start with my complaint. I had a hard time following the first few chapters. The story lines took too long to come together for me and the varying perspectives made it a little difficult to keep track of everything going on. I also feel that some of the story lines weren't quite wrapped up at the end of the book and I generally prefer a book to feel complete and not in need of a sequel. That being said this was WELL WORTH IT. I will read the sequel and it better not take forever otherwise I may have to track down the author and beg for spoilers.

This book had some of the best descriptive writing I have read in a long time. I could see, feel and even smell the characters and scenes. I was sucked into every moment of the story and that is exactly what I look for in a book. The story was a fascinating twist on a generally cliche 'end of the world conspiracy.' I was completely taken aback many times which doesn't often happen. The author left me with enough breadcrumbs, so to speak, to make me think I was figuring out the story, but I honestly had no idea.

I would highly recommend giving this a read.
This series must be read in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to read Impact Winter!

Rowan has always known there was something different about her. Seeing spirits has left her antisocial and introverted. So she avoids mirrors as much as she can. She might as well be an ostrich. When she receives a strange postcard with two words in Italian on it her whole life crumbles. How did she read a language she never studied? Why can't she remember her childhood? How come her first real memory is starting at MIT? What is wrong with her? Does this have something to do with her ability to see ghosts? Is there anyone she can trust?

Josh has spent most of his adult life trying to find out who is taking children with ESP and why. His first missing persons case was Ryanne and he had never stopped looking for her. He made a promise to her mother after all. Will he ever figure out how these children are targeted? Will he ever be able to find out what has happened to them? Can he stop the abductions? Or will he always be too late? Or is he just obsessed and delusional?

***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy apocalyptic paranormal speculative fiction where conspiracies are real, filled with suspense, action, mystery, adventure, horror, humor and a dash or two of romance )
